What you should know
Oakley Meta Vanguard is a more purpose-built sports-camera wearable than everyday Ray-Ban Meta glasses. With a wraparound frame, open-ear audio and Garmin or Strava integration, its differentiator is hands-free perspective footage and spoken sport context, not projected holograms.
Hardware and what actually changes
Meta announced Vanguard in September 2025 and set its launch for October 21. The company specifies a 12-megapixel wide-angle camera, 3K video, five microphones and IP67 protection. Integrations can relay Garmin performance data or create workout highlights; they do not turn the glasses into an independent GPS watch or a medical monitor. Lens fit and helmet compatibility are explicitly part of the design.
Phone, platform and software restrictions
Compatibility is a purchase condition rather than a footnote: Meta AI companion app; iOS 15.2+ or Android 10+ per Meta retail specification, with model/region checks. Check the current companion-app version and the support page for your territory. A product name shared across regions does not prove that the same sensors, digital services, languages or alerts are enabled in each market.
Battery, charging and ongoing expense
Battery evidence at this cutoff: Meta specifies up to nine hours per charge, six hours continuous music and up to 36 hours additional charging via case, not an independent WeraOne test. Runtime is shaped by radios, brightness, tracking modes and battery age; battery capacity and a light-use maximum are not actual measured endurance. Ownership-cost detail: Optional music, sports and cellular subscriptions; Meta AI and Garmin/Strava features depend on phone, accounts and region. Compare the replacement-charger and support options rather than treating launch price as total ownership cost.
Limits and cautions
The lenses contain no virtual screen, and advertised Garmin/Strava functions require supported services. Video recording needs attention to local privacy and consent. Open-ear listening near traffic remains an awareness hazard; IP67 does not make the glasses suitable for every immersion or weather use.
Who should buy it and what else to compare
A strong shortlist for cyclists or runners who already own compatible Garmin equipment and actually record exercise. Compare Ray-Ban Meta Gen 2 for casual style, Oakley Meta HSTN for a different fit and a dedicated action camera if sustained recording and rugged mounting are the main goal.
What independent evidence establishes
Only Meta launch and retail specifications were used for this entry. Endurance, wind audibility and comfort are manufacturer-reported, not WeraOne measured. WeraOne has not personally tested this unit. Manufacturer ratings and product announcements must be read separately from independent use reports, and no wellness metric here should be interpreted as a medical diagnosis.
Pre-purchase checklist
These are audio-and-camera eyewear, NOT virtual-screen glasses. Assess conspicuous recording indicators, privacy and consent obligations, prescription fitting, charging cases, phone and region AI services, open-ear audio and microphone use. Do not expect in-lens displays or genuine mixed-reality overlays.
