Soundbar, Portable Speaker or Desktop Monitors: Buy for the Room

Start with the listening position

A powerful sound system is not defined only by watts or the number of advertised audio channels. A TV three meters away, a computer monitor at arm’s length and a campsite ask fundamentally different questions. The geometry of the room and the placement of the speakers govern stereo separation, reflections and the believable direction of sound.

TV systems: understand what is physically included

Samsung’s HW-Q990F lists an 11.1.4-channel configuration and includes a subwoofer and rear speakers in the package; these separate enclosures require physical placement and power planning. Dolby Atmos compatibility does not itself prove actual overhead localization in your room. HDMI eARC is the preferred source path for many current television setups, but the television’s output format and game-console passthrough needs must be verified. Sonos Arc Ultra instead emphasizes the soundbar and Sonos ecosystem, with compatible optional expansion; it does not have an equivalent set of built-in HDMI inputs. A Sonos app/network requirement may be more onerous than a familiar TV remote.

Desktop audio: two boxes can matter more than channel labels

A pair of Edifier MR5 speakers can provide real left/right physical separation. Balanced analog connections are relevant around audio interfaces, while Bluetooth is convenient for casual listening. None of this guarantees a flat in-room frequency response. Desk surfaces and walls create reflections, and a three-way driver specification is a design description rather than a listening verdict. Compare dimensions, placement flexibility and whether the speakers need an interface.

Portable speakers: use-case comes first

JBL Charge 6 and Flip 7 prioritize battery operation, water/dust protection and Auracast grouping. Their stated sound power and duration differ; neither is a drop-in replacement for properly positioned stereo monitors at a desk. Marshall Acton III takes the opposite direction: a fixed AC-powered home speaker with physical EQ knobs, no battery and no water-resistance claim.

Recommendation

Choose a soundbar for a TV-centered room, separate powered speakers for a desk, and a rugged battery speaker for outdoor portability. Measure your space first and account for neighboring rooms and late-night listening. Prefer independent measured response and listening tests when evaluating specific tuning or dialogue intelligibility.
