Google Nest Hub second generation Review and Buying Guide: Who Should Buy It?

Buyer verdict

Though older than the newest smart displays, Nest Hub 2nd gen remains useful as a bedside control panel and Thread border router. The smaller screen suits household dashboards more than dedicated media viewing.

Specifications that influence the purchase

Verified manufacturer or primary documentation identifies the following characteristics; pairing a feature with the right control platform still matters:

Normalized product specifications
Display 7-inch 1024×600 touch LCD
Radio Wi-Fi 5, Bluetooth 5.0, Thread border router
Platform Google Home / Matter hub
Sensors Soli, ambient-light, temperature
Microphones 3 far-field microphones with mic-off switch

Smart-home purchasing needs a protocol check rather than a logo-only decision: Matter controller, Matter bridge, Zigbee hub and Thread border router are different responsibilities. Local recording or local routines may still require cloud logins, firmware updates or external hubs. Regional electrical codes and privacy law remain the buyer’s responsibility.

Limitations and real ownership trade-offs

The microphones and sleep sensing are not neutral features for every bedroom. Software experiences have changed over time and may vary by language or location; there is no camera for two-way video calls.

Installation, compatibility and privacy checklist

Audit Google-account permissions, family Voice Match and home-sharing roles before placing this in a common area. Verify supported Thread/Matter firmware. 2021 second generation; not first-generation Nest Hub.

Who should skip it — and alternatives

Skip it when the principal trade-offs above collide with your home, available budget or existing ecosystem. Google TV Streamer if you want the control panel on a television; Home Assistant Green plus a tablet for a customizable local dashboard. Check local warranty and support.

How the evidence should be read

Test evidence: No GearVerity hands-on test is claimed here. Functional performance beyond documented features requires independent testing of the exact regional model and firmware.

The technical table records verified listings and explicitly labelled vendor claims; it does not substitute for testing brightness, sound, throughput, security or household performance. Unknown certifications and undisclosed specifications were deliberately not filled in by inference.
