Synology DiskStation DS925+ Review and Buying Guide: Who Should Buy It?
Editorial research, not a first-hand laboratory review. Verified documents and attributed external tests were checked as of 2026-10-23. Prices and live stock are intentionally excluded.

Buyer verdict
DS925+ targets home offices and creators who want shared files, snapshots and local backups without administering a full server. ECC RAM and two 2.5GbE interfaces are practical details for an always-on box.
Specifications that influence the purchase
Verified manufacturer or primary documentation identifies the following characteristics; pairing a feature with the right control platform still matters:
| Cpu | AMD Ryzen V1500B 4-core/8-thread 2.2GHz |
|---|---|
| Ram | 4GB DDR4 ECC, up to 32GB |
| Bays | 4 SATA bays with expansion support |
| Network | dual 2.5GbE RJ45 |
| Os | Synology DiskStation Manager (DSM) |
| Storage | no drives bundled in standard bare NAS purchase |
Smart-home purchasing needs a protocol check rather than a logo-only decision: Matter controller, Matter bridge, Zigbee hub and Thread border router are different responsibilities. Local recording or local routines may still require cloud logins, firmware updates or external hubs. Regional electrical codes and privacy law remain the buyer’s responsibility.
Limitations and real ownership trade-offs
Drive compatibility is especially important: Synology modified its 2025-series policies by DSM 7.3, so release-day articles warning that all third-party HDDs are permanently blocked are out of date. RAID does not replace an off-site backup.
Installation, compatibility and privacy checklist
Check the manufacturer live drive compatibility list and DSM version, then plan a 3-2-1 backup. Purchase supported SSDs for cache workloads. Do not conflate DS925+ with DS925neo+ whose RAM differs.
Who should skip it — and alternatives
Skip it when the principal trade-offs above collide with your home, available budget or existing ecosystem. QNAP 4-bay alternatives for more flexible hardware ecosystems; a smaller NAS if workload is only family photo sync. Check local warranty and support.
How the evidence should be read
Independent evidence: Macworld independent review finds good small-office performance and expandable storage but less accessible apps; Synology 2026 policy clarifies compatibility. Check its tested size, firmware and methodology rather than treating it as WeraOne laboratory work.
The technical table records verified listings and explicitly labelled vendor claims; it does not substitute for testing brightness, sound, throughput, security or household performance. Unknown certifications and undisclosed specifications were deliberately not filled in by inference.
