What you should know
What makes it different
Released in 2023, the Fairphone 5 occupies the budget phones category for a specific reason. Fairphone 5 is not trying to win the fastest-chip contest. It prioritizes a removable battery, accessible replacement parts and comparatively long software maintenance, creating a different ownership model from glued-together flagships.
Display, speed and day-to-day use
Its Qualcomm QCM6490 platform and 6.46-inch 90Hz OLED display define the day-to-day experience. TechRadar valued the repairable construction but found the performance-to-price ratio less competitive. Fairphone’s January 2026 notice says sales and production have stopped, while parts and software support continue at least through 2031. That is a meaningful distinction for a refurbished purchase.
Cameras and limitations
The documented camera arrangement is Dual 50MP rear cameras. Official new-stock availability cannot be assumed in 2026. Buyers should confirm genuine spares, warranty transfers, past repairs and seller reliability; the modular design does not mean all internal components should be repaired by amateurs.
Battery and charging
The listed battery is 4,200mAh removable, with 30W wired charging. For a second-hand purchase, check battery wear and whether the original charging adapter is included.
Software and security support
Fairphone confirms security/software support to at least 2031, unlike many older devices whose support needs case-by-case checking. Confirm the current security patch and regional firmware eligibility before relying on it for daily banking or work.
Who should buy it in 2026?
Buy if: Buyers who value maintenance, battery replacement and a long-lived European phone. Skip if: Gaming power seekers or shoppers wanting the lowest possible price per benchmark point. On used devices, condition and remaining support matter as much as the model name.
Alternatives and regional differences
Fairphone Gen 6 for newer design; Pixel 8a for less repairability but long software updates. Regional note: No additional material variation documented in reviewed sources
